The game is not over for Georgekutty just yet.
Producer Antony Perumbavoor has officially announced Drishyam 4, confirming that the hugely successful Malayalam thriller franchise will return for another chapter. The announcement was made at the Mazhavil Manorama Awards, with Mohanlal and director Jeethu Joseph present, setting off fresh speculation over where Georgekutty’s story could go next.
While the news gives fans a reason to celebrate, there is an important caveat: the fourth film appears to be a franchise-level confirmation rather than a fully formed production announcement. A release date, shooting schedule, cast list, plot details and even confirmation that the script is ready have not yet been revealed.
The first Drishyam, released in 2013, turned Mohanlal’s Georgekutty into one of contemporary Indian cinema’s most memorable everymen. A cable-TV operator with an obsessive love for movies, Georgekutty used his knowledge of crime narratives — and an unnerving ability to stay several steps ahead — to protect his family after a crime invaded their lives.
Its success spawned Drishyam 2, then Drishyam 3, with the universe expanding from a tightly contained family survival drama into a larger cat-and-mouse game involving the police, old secrets and the price of living with a lie.
In fact, the Drishyam phenomenon travelled well beyond Malayalam cinema too, with its Hindi adaptations, led by Ajay Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar, emerging as major box-office successes.
For Jeethu, however, the decision to make another chapter has never been a straightforward commercial one. Following Drishyam 3, the filmmaker had said that he could not promise a fourth installment unless he found an idea strong enough to justify taking Georgekutty’s journey forward. He had also indicated that he did not want to keep extending the franchise without a compelling reason.
Drishyam 3 also left viewers with enough to debate. Its post-credit development, involving characters played by Siddique and Asha Sharath, was designed to leave audiences questioning whether their mission had truly succeeded. Jeethu later said the scene was shifted to the end credits because it delivered a different impact there.
Could that thread become the starting point for Part 4? It is too early to say. But it certainly leaves the door open for Georgekutty to face a new challenge.
Mohanlal is expected to return as Georgekutty, while Jeethu is expected to steer the next chapter, although neither has publicly laid out specific details about the film yet. The franchise has traditionally featured Meena, Ansiba Hassan and Esther Anil as Georgekutty’s family, alongside a recurring ensemble that has included Asha Sharath, Siddique, Murali Gopy and Kalabhavan Shajohn. No returning cast members beyond Mohanlal have been formally confirmed for Drishyam 4.
For now, the confirmation is enough to reignite anticipation around one of Malayalam cinema’s most durable thriller franchises. Georgekutty has survived years of suspicion. Whether he can survive one more round remains the question.
